Is my data really private?

Yes, your memories are yours alone. No personal data is ever transmitted to our servers or any third parties. Photos and videos are stored as references to the originals in your photo library. The app sends logs and metrics to our servers, but there is no sensitive or personally identifiable information. We use this data mainly for troubleshooting and internal reports.

Does Backtrack work offline?

Yes. Capturing, browsing, and semantic search all run on your device, so Backtrack works with no internet connection — on a plane, off-grid, or anywhere without signal. A connection is only needed to sign in, to manage your subscription through the App Store or Google Play, and for app updates.

How is Backtrack different from Day One, Apple Notes, or Google Keep?

Those apps sync your notes to iCloud or a Google account. Backtrack keeps every entry on your device with no cloud sync, combines text, photos, videos, and locations in a single entry, works fully offline, and finds things through on-device semantic search rather than exact keyword matching.

Does Backtrack use AI?

Backtrack does not use a large language model or a service like ChatGPT. The AI model used in Backtrack is an on-device embeddings model used to convert text to mathematical representations to support semantic search.

Is my data used to train AI models?

No. We never train AI models on your memories or other content you type, search, or store in the app. Your personal content stays on your device and is not sent to our servers for AI training. Backtrack uses an embedding model, which converts text into mathematical representations for search. It is a fixed model that does not learn, adapt, or update based on your input.

What happens to the photos and videos when I delete entries?

The photos and videos associated with your entries reside in your phone's media gallery. Backtrack only stores references to them and never deletes or modifies the originals.

Is there a free tier? What happens after the first 30 days?

There is no permanent free tier. If you don't cancel, your first payment is charged on day 30 at the rate of the plan you chose ($3 for monthly, $30 for yearly), and your subscription continues. If you cancel before day 30, you won't be charged.

How do I cancel?

You can cancel anytime, before the first payment or after, through your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Cancel before day 30 and you won't be charged. Cancel later and you'll keep access until the end of your current billing period.

What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription?

Your existing memories will remain on your device, but you'll need an active subscription to create new entries or use semantic search.
